Bidvest Steiner's Connected Hygiene Intelligence (CHI) system gets thumbs up from major users
Bidvest Steiner has developed Connected Hygiene Intelligence (C.H.I.), a solution designed to revolutionise hygiene and facility management. By harnessing IoT and smart technology, C.H.I. creates a connected ecosystem that enhances visibility, efficiency, and user experience.
Large corporate buildings face a persistent operational challenge: hygiene and service quality are highly visible to occupants, yet the underlying management model in many facilities still relies on manual inspection, static schedules, and reactive complaint handling. As building complexity and foot traffic scale, this approach becomes increasingly inefficient, difficult to audit, and hard to optimise.
C.H.I. uses a combination of sensors in dispensers, washroom traffic counters, digital feedback screens, and boardroom buttons to create a connected ecosystem that gives Facility Managers full visibility into building performance. In the washrooms, users can submit feedback directly through digital screens. A thumbs-down reaction instantly sends a WhatsApp task to a cleaner, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and allowing managers to track the washroom experience against actual visitor numbers. Consumables are monitored in real time, so toilet paper and soap are replenished before they run out. Cleaning is triggered by foot traffic, keeping spaces fresh exactly when they are busiest.
Standard Bank served as the primary proof-of-concept deployment partner, demonstrating how CHI improves visibility into operations while enhancing employee wellness and the overall washroom experience. Since installation, 99.85% of washroom users at Standard Bank offices have reported a thumbs up, reflecting consistently clean and well-stocked facilities. With over 9,000 sensors deployed, Bidvest Steiner is South Africa’s largest IoT provider in facility management and the single largest IoT provider to any bank worldwide.
All activity flows into a central reporting dashboard, giving managers clear insights into service performance and staff responsiveness.
Bidvest Steiner is expanding C.H.I. beyond hygiene into broader facility and hospitality intelligence. Planned sensor integrations include leak detection, air-quality monitoring, parking occupancy tracking, vape detection, and additional environmental sensing. The organisation is also developing AI-driven insight generation within the portal to automate trend interpretation and recommendation outputs as dataset maturity increases.
The C.H.I. deployment at Standard Bank demonstrates a fundamental shift in how hygiene and facility services can be governed. Instead of relying on estimation, manual verification, and reactive escalation, facilities teams now operate with continuous measurement, auditable task execution, and data-led optimisation. For large enterprises managing complex building portfolios, this transition represents a practical path toward measurable service assurance and evidence-based operational decision-making.
